HELP! Fuel line nut rusted, tin't remove fuel filter
On my 2002 GMC, the fuel line nut is rusted to the fuel filter (or possibly to the line; probably both) and I can't free information technology. I've done lots of whacking with hammers, Lead Blaster, Shimano penetrating oil, cold spray, and plenty of brute forcefulness.
I've gotten under and sprayed it with the Shimano stuff every mean solar day for a week. I just got the PB Blaster today.
I don't think I can reasonably estrus it, nor grind off the filter's nut, since I'grand working with fuel line.
Any other ideas? It's starting to await like I'll have to supplant the fuel line.

Re: HELP! Fuel line nut rusted, can't remove fuel filter
If you're seriously looking at fuel line replacement as an option, yous could become alee and remove the one-time 1.
Worst example, you'd accept more room to work and could employ bigger tools in a more than comfy position.
If you are able to drive the bunny indefinitely while the truck's down, yous could even look until yous're sure the gas has all evaporated and utilise some of those techniques that might involve estrus or sparks.
If it doesn't work, fuel line replacement is withal an option.

Re: HELP! Fuel line nut rusted, tin't remove fuel filter
Now THAT is a skillful idea. If I've already given up and declared the fuel line dead, I've got nada to lose; so I could remove the filter and line every bit an assembly. Then I could work on them while not laying under the truck. I tin then bleed them, rinse them so there's definitely no fuel in them, and use estrus.
I'll have to find out how that'southward done. As far as I tin tell, you tin't drop the tank without removing the fuel line; and you can't remove the fuel line without dropping the tank. Catch-22.

Re: HELP! Fuel line nut rusted, can't remove fuel filter
Hooray!
I got it loose! As Slaid Cleaves said in "Drinkin' Days", sometimes you gotta act like you've got a pair. So, I fabricated a bid for the Darwin Awards.
I cutting into the fuel filter's nut, slotting it with my dremel's diamond cutoff wheel almost of the way to the thread. Some sparks flew but non a lot. I had wiped upward the area and so in that location were no pools/drops of fuel around. I couldn't get all the way across the width of the nut but 2 corner cuts did the chore. It wasn't enough to scissure the nut but it relieved enough stress on the nut for me to creature-force the nuts until they were persuaded to cooperate.
For how badly it was stuck, the threads sure look clean and uncorroded. WTF?

pour some water or not-combustible oil on it, go to town.
Interesting thought. I nonetheless couldn't take a torch to the fuel filter/line even if I tried to fill the filter with water, but I could have felt better about my dremel work.
What kind of non-flammable oil exists? No oils come to mind that don't burn hands.

Mineral oil is the main fuel used by professional firespinners and firebreathers. Information technology is called for its high flashpoint and depression called-for temperature. As a firebreathing fuel information technology is ideal considering it volition not tend to burn as a liquid, due to the loftier flashpoint, thus preventing blowback.
Well, I judge it's less combustible than some other oils...

Re: Assist! Fuel line nut rusted, can't remove fuel filter
Update: Ran the fuel pump sans filter to empty the crap out of the tank merely nothing came out. Removed the bed to go access to fuel pump hole, got fuel pump out, got the terminal 3 gallons out (I now accept over 24 gallons of bad gas in containers), and got information technology about all the style back together.
The retaining ring that holds the fuel pump to its hole is all rusty and was a bitch and a half to remove; it'due south totally refusing to go back in identify. I'g going to see if I tin get a new one.

i idea you already said you were going to replace the whole thing? if its giving yous that much trouble, its most likely going to be better to replace the whole thing anyway considering its historic period and amount of rust

Re: Aid! Fuel line nut rusted, can't remove fuel filter
The fuel pump retaining ring is totally dissever from the fuel lines and filter, where were in a unlike place. I was expecting to supervene upon the fuel line but I establish out that it comes equally an associates that goes all the mode from the tank to the engine and costs $250, so I'm going to re-use the old one.
I don't know if the retaining ring normally comes with the tank or the pump, only neither of those is getting replaced.

Re: HELP! Fuel line nut rusted, can't remove fuel filter
Information technology's live!!!!!!
Took bed off, removed the fuel pump (big struggle with the retaining ring), emptied more than gallons from the tank (full of over 24 gallons removed now from my 24 gallon tank), replaced fuel filter, struggled with retaining ring reinstalling fuel pump, bought new retaining band for a whopping $26 (for a stamped out piece of steel!), failed to connect fuel pump footing strap, nearly committed suicide when I constitute out a fuel pump costs $300, moped around for a few hours, spent a half hour tracing wiring diagrams, went back out and re-tested fuel pump connector, reconnected ground strap, started truck.
